Golfers raise $18,000 for ultrasound

Hamilton golfers have given Western District Health Service’s (WDHS) ultrasound appeal an early boost.

The WDHS Op Shop Golf Tournament on Friday November 17 was a resounding success, raising more than $18,000 for a new ultrasound at Hamilton Base Hospital.

Attracting 31 teams, the Ambrose Stroke event featured dedicated ladies and mixed team events for the first time, as well as the longstanding men’s division.

The competition was a great start to an appeal to purchase a new ultrasound for the WDHS Midwifery Department. “The machine will cost about $50,000 and will allow the WDHS GP Obstetricians to conduct regular ultrasounds on pregnant mothers, aiding local babies with the best start in life,” WDHS Chief Executive Rohan Fitzgerald said.

Mr Fitzgerald said the Hospital Op Shop Golf Tournament had not only proven to be a highlight for golf enthusiasts but also a beacon of community support. “The numerous novelty competitions add an extra layer of fun and excitement to the tournament and it was fantastic to see the victorious teams’ achievements celebrated by all participants and spectators,” he said.

Although this would be his last tournament playing in an official capacity, Mr Fitzgerald said he was looking forward to soon being able to take some time out and improve his game in time for next year’s competition.

Axis Cleaning led by Kynan Caruana with a score of 53.625 won the men’s section, Jenny Pike and the Iluka Ladies took out the inaugural ladies’ competition with a score of 59.75 and Tim Peters leading the National Australia Bank team claimed top spot in the mixed competition with 57.25.

Mr Fitzgerald said the invaluable assistance from 30 volunteers from Hamilton Rotary, Iluka and WDHS ensured the seamless running of the event.

The tournament, now in its 14th year and held at the Hamilton Golf Club not only provides an enjoyable day of golf but plays a crucial role in contributing to the community’s health services.
