WDHS supports and encourages clinical and health services research, and is committed to the ethical and systematic gathering of information for use in decision-making and improvement of health care. The Board of Directors supports both direct involvement and initiation of research projects as well as participation in research projects undertaken by other organisations.

The Health Service does not have a Human Research Ethics Committee and resides for this purpose under the Southwest Health Care Ethics Committee. Although the Service will refer research projects to a Human Research Ethics Committee (Ethics Committee) for approval as required by this policy, the Board of Directors is still responsible for the overall governance of research activities. Good research governance and management practices are essential to ensure the responsible conduct of research. Such practices promote quality in research and enhance the reputation of the organisation and its researchers, minimising the risk of harm for all involved.

National Centre for Farmer Health

Evidence-based research underpins all activities of the National Centre for Farmer Health (NCFH). The Centre’s research is outcome driven to ensure that research positively impacts policies, practices and education that guide current rural health service delivery.

NCFH focuses on areas where research can make a difference in reducing disease and injury among farm men and women, agricultural workers and their families. One of the primary goals is to further investigate the identified health issues from earlier research and develop interventions that positively impact the lives of Australian farmers.

NCFH works with other academic institutions, health care providers and agricultural organisations to improve the quality, effectiveness, and appropriateness of health care.
