Breast Cancer Awareness Month – Fiona’s Story

Fiona’s journey with cancer began in 2011 when, at the age of 46, she found a lump in her breast through self-examination. After diagnostic screening, she received the news that she had Triple Negative Breast Cancer. Despite the shock, Fiona faced her diagnosis head-on and began what would become a long and challenging journey.

Over the last 13 years, Fiona’s cancer has returned five times. Fiona has undergone multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and during one recurrence, she tested to find the BRCA 1+ gene, despite no family history. This gene increased her risk of recurrence. The fourth time the cancer returned, she had to undergo a double mastectomy—a very challenging experience, made even harder by having to do it alone in hospital in Melbourne during the COVID lockdowns.

Following her double mastectomy, Fiona was given hope, with just a 1% chance of the cancer coming back. She decided to make the most of life, moving to Hamilton and in remission, taking on her dream role as a Minister at the Uniting Church. However, only six weeks in, Fiona collapsed and discovered the cancer had returned and metastasised to her spine, lungs, and bones, leading to a terminal diagnosis.

Despite the difficulties, Fiona has remained remarkably positive, and she credits the care she has received at Western District Health Service (WDHS) for much of her strength. Fiona is incredibly grateful for the support provided by Breast Care Nurse Maddie Pertzel and the Cancer Centre staff, as well as the amazing facilities at WDHS—many of which have been made possible thanks to community fundraising efforts. The community-funded Cancer Centre and MRI have played a crucial role in Fiona’s care, and she appreciates the convenience of having these services close to home.

Fiona has been undergoing Cold Cap Therapy using the scalp cooling machine generously donated to WDHS through a grant from the Honda Foundation. This therapy is only available in Hamilton, with the next nearest machine located in Geelong. Fiona receives treatments every three week during her chemotherapy at the WDHS Cancer Centre, helping her maintain her hair—a source of comfort for both her and her family as she prepares for her daughter’s wedding in November. This support has given her a sense of normalcy and wellbeing during a challenging time.

Beyond her medical care, Fiona has found strength in other aspects of WDHS’s holistic support. Recently, scans showed further bone metastases to both femurs meaning she recently underwent surgery in Warrnambool to strengthen her legs.  Fiona has been actively participating in the WDHS Cancer Wellness program run by the Allied Health Team and enjoys the Look Good Feel Better Program. The support from the WDHS Counsellor has also been a great source of comfort to Fiona, enhancing her wellbeing and providing coaching and mentoring.

Looking forward, Fiona is focused on the things that bring her joy. She is excited about her daughter’s upcoming wedding, which will be a cherished celebration for her family. She also has plans for a cruise to New Zealand with her husband and a family weekend at Cape Nelson with her loved ones. Later, she looks forward to celebrating her 60th birthday—a testament to her resilience and determination.

Fiona’s journey has been one of strength and resilience. She attributes her positivity to the support she has received from her family, local community, the WDHS team and her determination to make the most of each day. Her story is one of hope, community, and gratitude, as she continues to make every moment count.
