Access to local radiology plays an important role in delivering healthcare in Casterton, and any disruption to this service is significant for patients, clinicians and the hospital.
The current disruption to onsite X-ray services at Casterton Memorial Hospital has been caused by workforce shortages affecting Bendigo Radiology, and we recognise this has created uncertainty for local residents.
Since becoming aware of these challenges, Western District Health Service has worked to maintain access to imaging through interim arrangements, including dedicated appointments in Hamilton and transport assistance for patients who need it. These arrangements are intended to support patients while we continue working with Bendigo Radiology to identify additional options to restore local service delivery.
At the same time, we continue to invest in expanding healthcare services available in Casterton. Recent and upcoming initiatives include the introduction of a regular physiotherapy service (available three days a week) and new specialist surgical and medical clinics beginning this month, as well as onsite pathology and echocardiogram (ECG) as clinically needed.
We are also progressing plans to introduce cervical screening and diabetes education services, while expanding opportunities for community volunteers to support Meals on Wheels, community transport and other programs that help people remain connected and well in their own community. Supporting the health needs of the Casterton community remains our priority.
