The Hamilton Sleep Disorders Centre is a joint operation between Manse Medical and Western District Health Service. The centre is a state-of-the-art facility that has been open since May 2005. Approximately 270 studies per year are conducted.
The centre offers diagnostic sleep studies and CPAP implementation studies. The latter is for patients who have been diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) and are initiating CPAP treatment.
The Hamilton laboratory is the only of Manse Medical’s three sleep disorders facilities that caters for daytime sleep tests. These are MSLT (multiple sleep latency tests) and MWT (Maintenance of wakefulness tests). The aim of these tests is to assess the patients’ daytime sleepiness levels. An overnight sleep study is conducted the night prior to the daytime test.
The MSLT measures how long it takes for the patient to fall asleep, while the MWT measures the patients’ ability to stay awake during a designated time frame. [Source: Manse Medical Website].
