The four-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) provides a level 2 service in coronary care, high dependency and intensive care services including trauma and complex surgical cases.
Our ICU is equipped with Datex Omeda bed-side monitoring systems, networked to a central monitor. The Unit is equipped with two Bennett 840 ventilators and one iVent portable ventilator. The latter is generally reserved for non-invasive ventilation and/or transport.
There are eight telemetry units which allow cardiac monitoring anywhere in the acute hospital wards. The Unit also has a vigilio cardiac output monitor, which offers advanced haemodynamic monitoring, reserved for acutely unstable patients.
There is on-site i-STAT pathology, giving ABG, Electrolyte and Troponin results within minutes.
Medical support is supplied by the Director of Anaesthetics, Consultant Physicians, Medical Registrars and Interns.
Education is actively encouraged with financially assisted opportunities enabling staff to undertake a Graduate Diploma in Nursing specialising in critical care, intensive care or emergency. This course is offered annually in conjunction with Deakin University.
Successful applicants for the course are supported by a clinical teacher on-site with optional clinical placements arranged at metropolitan hospitals to gain further clinical experience.
Supervised up-skilling programs are offered for nursing staff who wish to gain experience in working in these critical care areas.
